Who exactly is at risk of Mold?
Anyone who may live or work in buildings that are inadequately ventilated and come in contact with water has a higher risk of exposure to mold and the illnesses associated with it. Small children, babies, the elderly, immune compromised patients, and people with existing conditions are also at higher risk to mold related illness.
Where does Mold thrive?
All mold requires to grow is water, oxygen, and a food source. Because of this versatility, mold can grow on any organic substance including wood, paper, carpet, food, and even insulation. Often when moisture builds up in buildings or on building materials, mold growth will begin. If left undiscovered or untreated, it will grow. Large growths can have negative affects on your health. In our humid location in the Hilton Head SC area the conditions are perfect for moisture build up indoors leading to mold growth. While you can not eliminate mold and mold spores, you can control how much moisture is in doors and control growth that way.
Is there anything that can be done to avoid mold growing out of control?
If you are experiencing mold growth, you need to find and get rid of the excess water or moisture feeding it. Sometimes it is caused by leaky plumbing. When you find mold growing on hard surfaces, wash it off with detergent, rinse thoroughly, and dry completely. Any materials with spores, such as ceiling tiles, drywall, or carpet, must be removed entirely and replaced to prevent regrowth.
